Master's Degree Programme in Bioinformatics (BIOI)
Finnish Universities in Tampere and Turku offer an International Master's Degree Programme in Bioinformatics
The education is interdisciplinary and jointly managed by the Institute of Biomedical Technology in the
University of Tampere and the Department of Information Technology in the University of Turku. The
participating departments have a long and wide experience in bioinformatics training and research.
Each university accepts fifteen students annually to start in the program. Majority of our students
have come from outside of Finland, especially from Asia and Africa.
The applicants should have at least a Bachelor's degree in a related field such as:
- molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology or genetics
- computer science or statistics
The entire curriculum is taught in English. Therefore the students should be fluent in both spoken
and written English, demonstrated in an internationally recognized English language test such as
TOEFL or IELTS.
The students normally get their Master's degree in two years. Teaching combines Internet-based
and traditional learning methods, and also research work individually and in groups. Learning to
work with collaborators with different backgrounds is one of the key aspects in our programme.

Virtual Bioinformatics
IBT Bioinformatics is actively developing courses for scientists and students who use or will need to use bioinformatics methods and programs in their research. We can say that the distance learning concept is highly suitable for this topic.
Our Virtual Bioinformatics project has been running nearly 10 years, and has been awarded by Ministry of Education, and loved by our students all these years.
Our web courses are being used as part of the curriculum in the Finnish universities of Helsinki, Tampere and Turku, in particular the joint Bioinformatics MSc programme in Universities of Tampere and Turku
Currently we offer three modules, each equivalent to approximately two weeks of full-time study. The extent of each course is given in credit points (cp, European standard ECTS credits).
About our web courses
Introduction to Bioinformatics (3 cp)
Bioinformatics in Functional Genomics (4 cp)
Structural bioinformatics (4 cp)
